The term Root Definition summarizes a relevant system as perceived by a stakeholder. This concept is derived from Soft Systems Methodology, where the Root Definition captures the essence of what a system is and what it is meant to accomplish, reflecting the viewpoint and needs of those who are engaged or affected by the system. This definition helps in establishing a clear understanding of the system's purpose and its boundaries, ensuring that the perspectives of various stakeholders are taken into account.

By focusing on the stakeholders' perceptions, a root definition clarifies the objectives and the operational context of the system, ultimately guiding the development of solutions that are meaningful and relevant to the users. This emphasis on stakeholder perspective distinguishes the Root Definition from viewpoints that may only represent the interests or perspectives of specific individuals, such as the Sponsor or the Analyst, or from broader statements like a Mission Statement that may not capture nuanced perceptions.
